Economics for the Common Good: The Work of Christian Economists
A conference sponsored by:
The Association of Christian Economists
The Department of Economics and Business at Hope College
Conference Dates: July 20th to 22nd 2023
Submissions Due: January 15th 2023
The economics discipline is at the center of some of the biggest questions that humans face, including those about poverty, wealth, the role of the state, inequality, growth, the cost of living, migration, education, and family. Christian thinking has often motivated scholars to delve deeply into these important questions, sometimes offering a distinct way of approaching our pursuit of the common good. In order to explore Christian’s work in the discipline of economics, and to spur Christian thinking about economic topics, the Association of Christian Economists invites all interested scholars to join us for an academic conference at Hope College in Holland, MI, in July of 2022.
The conference will feature three plenary lectures by accomplished scholars, as well as concurrent sessions featuring presentations by economists from a variety of Christian theological and economic traditions. We welcome papers that are theoretical, empirical, historical, or philosophical in nature, as well as proposals for panel sessions around a theme of general interest. We welcome papers that specifically address the relationship between faith and economic reasoning as well as those that use conventional economic analysis to investigate questions of interest. Selected papers from the conference will appear in Faith & Economics, the journal of the Association of Christian Economists.
Individual paper submissions should include a title, author, and abstract. Full paper drafts are welcome. Complete session proposals are encouraged and should include title/author/abstract for 3 to 4 speakers. Panel sessions that do not include research presentations should include a title, a detailed description of the topic to be discussed, and the proposed participants. All questions and submissions should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. First priority will be given to submissions received before January 15th, 2023.
Submissions from graduate students are encouraged. Students can attend at a discounted rate, and there is a limited pool of travel support available for students whose papers are accepted. Please indicate your desire to apply for this support in an email to email@example.com.
Hope College’s campus, green and full of bursting flower beds in July, abuts Holland’s attractive downtown with its many shops, restaurants, and brew-pubs. The beautiful sandy beaches of Lake Michigan are close by. We anticipate a convivial time of scholarly discussion, fellowship, and conversation over the course of the meetings.
