Ottawa University’s Gwartney Institute for Freedom, Justice, and Human Flourishing (GI) is seeking to fill a tenure-track, 12 month appointment as associate or assistant professor position to help lead the institute in its mission to create a unique scholarly and educational environment for the examination and study of economic freedom and social justice, and their role in the advancement of human flourishing. The Institute will promote clarity in the understanding of both economic freedom and social justice, communicating their contribution to more purposeful, creative, and satisfying lives. The central focus of the Institute will be to recognize the engagement between people and social institutions along with the economic, political, religious, and cultural factors that shape them.
The Institute will consider candidates with a doctorate in economics, finance, or law (or a closely related field). The candidate should ideally have a good publication record in the areas of economic freedom and/or social justice and be interested in how the Christian faith and other religions interact with those areas. This person will be an effective teacher; strong in both public speaking and writing. The position will be located at the campus in Ottawa, Kansas and will create pathways that connect the Angell Snyder School of Business to the University’s other sites in Kansas, Arizona, Wisconsin, and online. Limited travel to the undergraduate residential campus in Surprise, AZ will be expected for some programming activities. Our multi-campus structure will create opportunities for students to engage in Institute activities across campuses. The start date for the position is flexible, May 1 through August 1.
The primary responsibilities of this position will be speaking engagements, Institute activities/events, instruction at the University, help with student recruitment, and publications with both popular and scholarly outlets. Speaking engagements at high schools and other venues will serve two primary functions: first to recruit student scholars through exposure to the Institute and OU in general and secondly to promote economic education in the high school curriculum through meetings with high school teachers and administrators. This key person will help build a national profile through social and other media, and be an expert that national news outlets will turn to for input regarding how economic freedom and/or social justice impact human flourishing. A key initiative the position assists with is our weekly podcast called Faith and Economics. A secondary responsibility will be teaching five courses per year. The Institute has a team environment including two other professors, two graduate assistants and an undergrad scholar. Furthermore, the professor will work with the OU Advancement office on future funding of Institute initiatives, including meeting with potential donors and building an annual report.
